The tournament featured 30 events over 11 days, with buy-ins ranging from $120 to $3,150 for the main event. With 136 players willing to pay that top-dollar amount for the Scotty Nguyen Poker Challenge V championship event, $395,760 was up for grabs in the prize pool.
Scotty Nguyen presides over the entire tournament series, and in the main event he nearly dominated the action as well as playing host.
The seasoned pro made the final table to cash in fifth place for a $25,724 win.
So who was the player who bested Nguyen at his own tournament to take the top spot? It was Scott Standridge from Ft. Smith, Ariz.
The final-table results were:
Place Name Hometown Prize 1 Scott Standridge Ft. Smith, Ariz. $98,941 2 Michael Wolf Alerdo, Texas $55,406 3 Tony Lay Oklahoma City, Okla. $48,283 4 Bronson Tucker Round Rock,Texas $35,618 5 Scotty Nguyen Las Vegas $25,724 6 Keith Yarbrough Van, Texas $20,975 7 Jason Ke San Antonio, Texas $19,788 8 Debbie Inman Bixby, Okla. $17,809 9 Steven Baker Owasso, Okla. $16,820The main event changed slightly this time around for the Scotty Nguyen Poker Challenge. For the SNPC IV, the buy-in for the main event had been $5,150, and it drew in 124 players.
This year, the buy-in was lowered by a couple thousand dollars and attracted a slightly larger crowd numbering 136.
The Scotty Nguyen Poker Challenge has been growing in popularity over the years. Last year it even drew in some other pros to try their hand at the Oklahoma action. One of those players was T.J. Cloutier, who ended up winning the main event.
The big-name pros may have been pulled away this week by other major tournaments happening around the world. The World Poker Tour wrapped up a stop in Foxwoods this week, while players also checked out the World Series of Poker Main Event final table, and some could even be in the Philippines for the Asia ((Pacific Poker)) Tour.
