Trickett had to outlast a field of 376 players at the G Casino in Luton to win £106,000 for first place. Trickett also had to navigate a difficult final table that included Martin Green, David La Ronde, Stuart Rutter and well-known darts expert Wayne Mardle.

Although Trickett became the youngest winner of a GUKPT main event, he is by no means a rookie in the poker world. This summer Trickett finished fourth in WSOP Event 46, $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em Six-Handed, for an impressive $245,927, and the youngster had several large cashes in bigger U.K. tournaments before that.

After winning, the former professional soccer player said he was delighted, and confirmed that the boost to his bankroll would certainly help him remain a force in professional poker.

La Ronde went into the final table as the chip leader but by the time they were heads-up Trickett actually held a slight chip lead. All the chips went into the middle with Trickett holding A-Q to La Ronde's A-7.

Trickett's victory had little impact on the GUKPT leaderboard, with Nik Persaud still firmly in the lead with 230 points while well-known card players Marc Goodwin and Julian Thew have 183 and 155 respectively.

The GUKPT began in 2007 and has since crowned countless poker champions in cities across the United Kingdom. The tour now moves north as the seventh leg of the year will be staged in the Grosvenor Casino in Bolton Sept. 1-7. The season will culminate with the Grand Final in London Nov. 27-30.
